Serizawa Fumino

After a long hiatus, mon0r and the tsundere articles are back with more. So, without further ado, the next tsundere to grace the computer monitors of loyal mon0r readers worlwide is Serizawa Fumino (Last name, Given Name). You may remember her from the anime adaptation of Mayoi Neko Overrun, or if you’re more the bookish type, the manga or light novel version. Whichever version happened to catch your fancy, Mayoi Neko Overrun has surely left an indelible impression of Fumino in your mind.

What is a Tsundere? Am I a Tsundere?

Well, that depend on multifarious factors. First of all, are you a 2D anime character like Fumino Serizawa? Do you have an irascible personality replete with explosive outbursts? Do you tend to hit your crush (aka Tsuzuki Takumi) whenever he says anything that irritates and/or pleases you? Are you batshit crazy?

If you don’t meet any of any of those requirements, I’m afraid you don’t qualify as a Grade-A, mon0r-certified tsundere. Granted, the term “tsundere” describes a personality type and is thus applicable to real life. But let’s get realistic here, the characteristics laid out just previously are some of the most dreadful traits for a partner to have. They basically entail abuse and weekly, if not daily, beatings.

“Okay, tsunderes seem to be horrible characters. Why would you love them?” I hear you say.

“Aha, and that’s the crux of the issue isn’t it?” I reply with fervor, “For you see, despite the weekly beatings and the yelling and the mind games, they hold something that we treasure.”

“And that treasure would be?” you ask, holding your breath, eyes wide as dinner plates.

“Dere dere,” I say, “the phase in which tsunderes become shy and lovey-dovey. The phase in which they act like normal girls – normal girls who are shy in their crush’s presence – normal girls who act vulnerable and look protect-able.”

(As is mon0r tradition, I am behooved to speak about what a tsundere actually is. )

Life may look all nice and rosy for Fumino and the gang, what with the fancy Stray Cats Cafe and whatnot, but if you dig a little deeper (or actually watch the show), you’ll know for a fact that Fumino was left on her own in an orphanage after her parents died. It was there that she met Tsuzuki Takumi, her first friend and crush. Unable to confess her feelings in a straightforward manner, they continue to be friends over the years. Strangely enough, and in true tsundere fashion, Fumino tends to say the exact opposite of what she means, something that Takumi has picked up on.

And if that wasn’t enough, Fumino has the trademark tsundere twintails. It’s the hairstyle a multitude of tsundere girls have chosen to use, like Kagami from Lucky Star or Tohsaka Rin from Fate/Stay Night.
